1st fridayHappy October everyone… This month’s First Friday Feature focuses on a longstanding Hauser tradition that turns 45 this year – our annual canned food drive. The mission of this effort is two-fold: feed those who are hungry and give our students the opportunity to help people in need.  Last year we collected over 25,000 non-perishable items – wow!

For those of you who are new to Hauser, last year was the first time our PTO ran the drive (previously run by Hauser staff), and it really takes a village to pull it off.  The drive will be held in April again, but our planning process is going to start well before then. In fact, our Canned Food Drive committee recently met with the PTO Executive Board and a few interested parents to talk about what we can do to make this event even more meaningful moving forward.

The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Food Pantry in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood has historically distributed the food our students have collected. New this year, we’re planning to contribute a portion of the collected food to a local food pantry, as there is great need right here in our own backyard.  The committee also plans to look for ways to get our students more involved in the delivery of the food, in hopes of deepening the meaning of this philanthropic experience.

If you’d like to be a part of moving this great tradition forward, please join the committee.  There are small tasks and large ones, and we need your help.  For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lisa Gaynor (ltgaynor@aol.com) or Lisa Freel (freel@prodigy.net).

Thanks, and have a great weekend!
